![]() They printed it on a bright purple background. So Tom and his team came up with a redesign that included a big basketball that was also a sun with long red-to-orange sun-rays coming off it. They were moving into a new arena, and they wanted a new look. Tom’s first big design was for the the Phoenix Suns, who were celebrating their 25th year in the league. ![]() Then with sublimation, you could print that design straight onto the material without any embroidery or extra weight. Now for the first time, you could design something in Photoshop, and make it as big and colorful as you wanted. Sublimation is a process of printing dye directly into the fabric. And there was a new technique to get those drawings onto a jersey: dye sublimation. Computer programs like Photoshop and Illustrator helped him dream up new logo designs. Complicated graphics would have taken a massive amount of embroidery, which would have added additional weight and made the jersey hotter to wear.īut soon after Tom O’Grady joined the NBA, he would get some new tools to work with. All the details-the numbers, the names, the logos-had to be sewed on. Until the early 90s, there had been real limits to what could be done with jerseys. Tom O’Grady had nothing to do with the new Hornets uniform, but he took it as a sign that the league was ready for bolder designs. ![]() Because in 1988, the Charlotte Hornets introduced a radical new color to its uniforms: teal. It was, says O’Grady, “not a sophisticated business.”īut that was all about to change. Before O’Grady, the design of team uniforms was often left to equipment managers. There might have been a stripe here or there, maybe a cool font, but that was about it. They had simple two or three color schemes, with the team name across the front. Before O’Grady joined the league, most NBA jerseys looked something like that classic Bulls jersey. Many of these designs can be traced back to one man-Tom O’Grady, who, in 1990, became the league’s first creative director. Or the Milwaukee Bucks’ green uniform with a giant picture of a purple stag. Like the Atlanta Hawks’ red and black jersey with a fierce-looking Hawk swooping in across the entire front of it. The 1990s produced some of the wildest, loudest, jerseys ever seen on a basketball court. The Raptors jersey may have been particularly garish, but it wasn’t the only jersey of its kind. They were, in the words of one critic, “cartoonish and ridiculous.” Barney’s Coffeeshop can be found two doors further along, while Barney’s Uptown is across the street. But the dinosaur on the Raptor’s jerseys ended up being compared to a different, much friendlier 90s dinosaur: Barney. Simply look for the beginning of the street at the top of the Singel canal and walk until you see Barney’s Farm proudly occupying a corner on the right hand side. LocationĪbout halfway along Haarlemmerstraat, one of the more popular and interesting streets in Amsterdam, Barney’s can be found walking distance from Central Station. The offerings in Barney’s Coffeeshop are notably more expensive than in many other Amsterdam coffee shops, with Barney’s reputable name and long pedigree of awards for its products being the reason. You may, however, bring your purchases from Barney’s Coffeeshop to any of the sister locations to enjoy. As such, they are forbidden to sell Amsterdam’s more unique products. The sister locations a few doors away serve things that an Amsterdam coffee shop is not allowed to: notably alcohol. One very important thing to note is that only the main location, Barney’s Coffeeshop, is allowed to sell anything to smoke. Barney’s Farm and Barney’s Uptown tend to draw older crowds and couples, as these are primarily cafés serving alcohol and delicious – if slightly pricey – food. The main location is usually filled with tourists in their mid-twenties drawn by the promise of some famous and award-winning strains. No matter which Barney’s you choose to visit, the atmosphere is lively, compared to many other Amsterdam coffee shops. ![]() There is also a fourth location, Barney’s Lounge located in another part of the city. The deco is surprising: it recreates the atmosphere of an old apothecary.Īn unusual situation, even in Amsterdam Barney’s is more than one place the famous family of cafés and coffee shops being primarily made up of three locations all centred around the same street corner on Haarlemmerstraat: Barney’s Coffeeshop, Barney’s Farm and Barney’s Uptown. Barney's has been created 23 years ago and has always been well known as a very friendly coffee shop for travelers and back packers. Built inside a 500 years old building, Barney's not only sells good cannabis products but it is also a place where you can enjoy very good food at any time. Located not far from Central Station in the very famous shopping street Harlemmerstraat, Barneys is a pillar in Amsterdam coffee shops.
